This artwork is a study in expression — not realism.
In this video, I paint a digital portrait of Tom Hanks, one of cinema’s most recognizable and emotionally versatile actors. The goal was not to copy a photograph, but to interpret his presence through color, gesture, and energy — transforming observation into emotion.
The portrait was painted digitally using Sumo Paint, a creative application developed by the Finnish company Sumo (sumo.app).
Sumo Paint is part of their online creative suite — powerful browser-based tools that allow artists to draw, paint, and experiment without installation.
Its intuitive interface, expressive brush system, and real-time layering make it ideal for spontaneous, painterly workflows such as this expressive portrait session.
About the Artwork
Working on an iPad while observing a photo of Tom Hanks, I approached the piece with loose, bold strokes — focusing on rhythm and tone rather than detail.
The brushwork is energetic and instinctive, guided more by feeling than precision.
Instead of recreating reality, I aimed to convey warmth, character, and the subtle emotional gravity that defines Tom Hanks’s on-screen presence.
The process combines structured observation with expressive freedom — an intersection of portraiture and improvisation that digital tools make possible.
